The MHRC is mandated to promote and assist basic, clinical and applied research in the health sciences in Manitoba and advise the minister in respect of such matters relating to health research as the minister may refer to the council for its consideration.

From moneys received from the Province, council provides funds for research in the health sciences through a number of grants and awards programs.

Core programs are funded by grants from the Government of Manitoba. Funding for 2008/09 is $6,000,000.00 from the Department of Energy, Science and Technology.

Funding is focused towards support of new investigators through the new Manitoba Chairs program and Operating and Establishment Grants. In addition, salary support for trainees is provided through a number of clinical fellowships, co-ordinated post doctoral fellowships and co-ordinated graduate studentships. Partners in funding for the coordinated personnel competition included CancerCare Manitoba, Manitoba Institute of Child Health and the St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation.
