The MHRC is mandated to promote and assist basic, clinical and applied research in the health sciences in Manitoba and advise the minister in respect of such matters relating to health research as the minister may refer to the council for its consideration.

From moneys received from the Province, council provides funds for research in the health sciences through a number of grants and awards programs.

Core programs are funded by grants from the Government of Manitoba. Funding for 2010/11 is $6,000,000.00 from the Department of Innovation, Energy and Mines.

Funding is focused towards support of new investigators through the Manitoba Chairs program and Operating and Establishment Grants. In addition, salary support for trainees is provided through clinical fellowships, co-ordinated postdoctoral fellowships and co-ordinated graduate studentships. Partners in funding for the coordinated personnel competitions include:

  • Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation
  • Manitoba Institute for Child Health supported by the Childrens’ Hospital Foundation of Manitoba
  • Health Sciences Centre Foundation
  • St. Boniface Hospital & Research Centre Foundation
  • University of Manitoba, Faculty of Graduate Studies
  • The Lung Association, Manitoba
  • Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada
